On November 26th 2019 a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit Albanian territory, causing the destruction of public and private infrastructures, affecting thousands of families and resultiung in deaths and injuries, leaving 14,000 displaced people.

Thousands of buildings throughout the whole county have been severely damaged, including schools and healthcare facilities. The Albanian Development Fund was responsible for managing the initiative "Reconstruction of educational institutions in areas affected by the earthquake" which aims to rebuild educational structures seriously damaged or destroyed by the earthquake.

The reconstruction planning process has been led and developed by the local self-government units and the authorities which are responsible for dealing with the consequences of natural disasters and, when necessary, to guarantee safety and health conditions.
